The Friend.tech saga
The viral app that proved Base could carry a consumer hit — and the cautionary tale of what came after.
The rise
Friend.tech launched on Base in August 2023, only days after Base mainnet opened. Users could buy and sell "keys" tied to creators' accounts; key holders got private chat access. For weeks the app dominated Base activity and onchain Twitter chatter, generating very large daily fees at its peak.
The decline
After the initial frenzy, engagement and key prices fell sharply through 2024. A v2 was launched later in 2024 with a new token (FRIEND) and a different model, but did not recapture the original moment. The team later announced they would step away from active development.
Why the story matters
Friend.tech demonstrated that Base could host a true consumer phenomenon — and it also became the case study for retention being harder than virality. Most onchain consumer products since cite the Friend.tech curve as the thing to study and avoid.
